Interviews and wrap from Day 2 of Racing

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Tom Slingsby – Winner of KPMG Regatta

Tom Slingsby and the Australia team may not have enjoyed the best of starts this weekend – indeed he confessed he was embarrassed by their starting record – but you couldn’t fault the team’s extraordinary recoveries in five of the six races. In the end it’s about getting to the event final and giving yourselves the chance of an overall win; and that’s what the Australian team did, capitalising on the opportunity to take their first event win of the season – better still on home waters on a cracking late summer day.

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Nicolai Sehested Team Denmark takes 2nd Place

If consistency is a hallmark of success it could be reasonably be argued that the Rockwool Denmark SailGP team deserved to win the final of the SailGP Sydney event. A scorecard of 2,3,2,4,4 to take top place entering today’s final of the Sydney event was an unmatched set of results for the weekend. Despite leading much of the final race, it wasn’t to be for the Danes, with the Australian’s securing the win, after a very well judged ‘slam dunk’ tack on the approach to the last top mark. But, deservedly, Rockwool Demark has cemented itself in the top three for the season, along with Australia and New Zealand, going into the next event at Christchurch.

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Nathan Outteridge Interview

Standing in for Peter Burling, who was at home for the birth of his first child, Nathan Outteridge consolidated New Zealand’s second place in the season’s championship table, by qualifying for the Final. Outteridge felt that some rustiness contributed to their slower recovery to their OCS on the start line of the final race, leaving the Danes and Australians to get away.

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Blair Tuke Interview

New Zealand’s wing trimmer Blair Tuke was impressed with Nathan Outteridge’s ability to slot right in for Peter Burling to secure third place in the SailGP Sydney event. Here he describes the role of the wing trimmer in optimising speed and the nature comms with the driver and the flight controller.

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Taylor Canfield Interview

Despite having virtually no practice prior to racing in Sydney the new look US SailGP team showed moments of real promise on the weekend, ending on a high note with 4th place in Race 5. Skipper Taylor Canfield describes the critical role of data analysis in accelerating the learning curve.

SailGP Sydney 2024 | Erik Heil Interview

The German SailGP team is the newcomer to the league, but they scored an emphatic victory in Race 4 on Day 2, holding off numerous challenges to secure their first race win. Skipper Erik Heil was happy with their weekend and describes the takeaways from SailGP Sydney.
