Bart's Bash Event at New Quay Yacht Club

by Nick James 30 Sep 2020 10:05 UTC 12 September 2020

The annual Bart's Bash event took place on Saturday 12th Sept under sunny skies and a westerly force 3 breeze. The perfect early autumn conditions drew an excellent entry in these Covid-afflicted times of 10 dinghies for the morning event and a further 5 cruisers in the afternoon.

Dinghies

The dinghy event covered the generations with enthusiastic juniors through to still enthusiastic seniors and all ages in between. There were a number of multigeneration both boats as well as intergenerational rivalries, all efficiently managed by Crawford and Cathy in the Committee boat and Pete Thomas and Trystan in the rescue boat.

The racing was close and although former GB Laser Squad sailor Robbie Robinson took all 3 dinghy races, the margins of victory were 16s, 16s and 1s in races 1-3 with places 1-3 only separated by 100s or less each time. New member Ian Eyres sailing his first club event performed creditably in a laser and junior members Will Best, Henry Powell and Stephan Williams all put in great performances, with Thomas in the Tera managing a 6th in one race.

Cruisers

The cruiser racing took place in the afternoon using the windward leeward format. There were five entries for the three race series with tightly fought competition for the first three places. Race one saw the Davies household competing in their Hawk as well as the all-Seal crewed very pretty gaff rigged Malakin making the fifth boat.

Race 1 got under way with a few clashes around the pin end mark with Jonathan Price Jones in Witch Doctor sailing a well-executed race to take both line honours and the race on corrected time.

Race 2 saw the finishing order reversed with Brainstorm taking line honours but not doing enough to make up her time on both Witch Doctor and Sprite well sailed by Crawford McLeary. Race 3 was a one lap sprint with the wind having shifted well to the left making the beat very one sided and the run a reach. Line honours and fastest overall was Chris Seal in Brainstorm with Crawford McLeary second and Jonathan Price Jones third. Overall Jonathan Price Jones won with 2 firsts from Brainstorm and Sprite.

Race Officer team Nick and Alison James plus thanks to guest Dave Rapley for the cruiser photos.
