If you're someone who enjoys competitive, tight racing, one design classes may well be for you.

One design racing is a great way to go head-to-head with your competition from start to finish. Many one design fleets attract an enthusiastic and experienced group of sailors, meaning you're also going head-to-head with some of the best in the game.

The International Etchells Class Association of Australia has a strong fleet with competitions around the country.

This week our highlighted sailing opportunities includes a Melbourne-based Etchells, as well as crew positions in Balmain (NSW) and Fremantle (WA).

Available Crewing Positions:

Jukes of Hazzard – Melbourne, VIC
Etchells, 33 foot, RBYC

Jukes of Hazzard are a competitive one design crew that race most Saturday afternoons in Summer at Royal Brighton Yacht Club.

They look forward to doing the Victorian Etchells States each year and the National Championships occasionally. The team has sailed in three Etchells World Championships and are hoping to compete at the Worlds in Brisbane in 2018.

They like to be competitive but the focus is on sailing for fun.

Argo – Fremantle, WA

Argo is a consistent podium finisher and optimised to compete.

Their race program entails 4 series off Fremantle comprising the ORWA Offshore program of races conducted between September and April each year, and includes:

  1. 3 weekend Cat 3 & 4 races (two day) destination day races
  2. 6 Inshore Cat 3 & 4 day races
  3. 7 Bluewater overnight (Cat 2 & 3 races)
  4. IRC State Championship regatta (WWL & Passage races)

Over the last 3 years, they have variously come 1st 2nd or 3rd in each of these series including a back to back 3rd in the Siska series (WA's premier Bluewater trophy series).

Loose Change - Sydney, NSW
Crossfire 20 with sports rig, 20 foot, BSC

About 2 yrs ago Loose Change broke its mast. Rather than putting the same standard rig mast back on, they sourced an old 18 footer's carbon rig.

Roni Ormandlaki from Roni Rigging at Rushcutters Bay installed the rig with new standing and running rigging.

A new Kevlar square top main was made to measure by Sydney Sailmakers of Drummoyne.

With more sail area came added stress on the hull which was stiffened when Michael Bartley at Hunters Hill installed new bulkheads.

With a taller mast also came the need for a larger spinnaker with oversized carbon spin pole also made by Roni Rigging.

Loose Change competes all year round in various west harbour and main harbour combined club series as well as one-off regattas. In 2017 she won the Australia Day Regatta (Mixed Fleet Division).

With prize giving held at Sydney Town Hall it was a proud moment for the little boat from Balmain that took on the larger yachts.
