Bart's Bash 2015 winners revealed

by Amy Harvey 2 Nov 2015 20:29 UTC 2 November 2015

The final results are in and have been calculated by the Bart's Bash team, and the winner of Bart's Bash 2015 has been revealed as Alex Schon and Marc Hiles, sailing at Lake Deneys Yacht Club, South Africa.

Clacton Sailing Club, UK, took the rest of the podium places with Pete Boxer and Eilish Dempsey claiming 2nd place and Matthew Burrell and Jack Wayland taking 3rd.

Alex and Marc beat thousands of participants from across 62 countries, who took part in the global sailing event on September 20th 2015. The final results have been published and can be found at www.bartsbash.com/bashboard

After hearing of the news, Alex who sailed with Marc in a Nacra F20 commented "This year we had winds of 35knots and with a short, sharp chop this made for a wild ride, with our Nacra 20 at times launching itself right out of the water. We had a fantastic ride and took a somewhat conservative approach. With only Marc out on the wire, we managed to keep our beast upright. I think that the tough conditions prevented more people from attending, but I really believe that this event needs to grow and that the great work that is being done needs to spread throughout the world, in particular throughout Africa."

Bart's Bash has so far seen in excess of 50,000 people taking part in the event and has also been a catalyst for encouraging more people both young and old into the sport. All the funds raised from Bart's Bash are used to help the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation improve the lives of young people through sailing.

To date the international sailing charity has supported 20 different inspiring sailing projects across 6 countries, with funds totalling more than £250,000.

More money is due to be granted in the coming months following a second grant giving process which closes on Monday 2nd November.
