Christmas came and went quicker than a raging tide and with celebrations to bring in the new year full steam ahead, I don't think there were too many waking up without a sore head on the first of January.
While I sit and type this editorial, I am sitting cosy and warm inside our home away from home on the Mornington peninsula. Though some internet coverage would complete the setup, it wasn't until the time came to erect the tent, which bought back old memories of my childhood camping days in the same camping ground. Some twelve years ago was the last time I had set up a tent. This time around, I was met with a solid 30 knot gale blowing, setting up a new tent proved challenging and was certainly a laugh, it wasn't at the time though.
My dear wife had the idea of heading away with our children to get them interested in camping. I must say, they took to it well but did pack a little too many teddies for my liking. Nevertheless, this trip has certainly been one to remember.
Camping in my view is something that can be spare of the moment or, if you're like us and are going to spend any length of time at one location and of course have young children, you do want things as comfortable as possible. Doing it hard can only cause arguments and should you get a spattering of rain, well then that can really upset the apple cart.

Ideally, when you're setting up, you really do need to take into consideration the size of your tent before embarking on the nearest camping store to kit out. I on the other hand, never tend to think in advance and while one the odd occasion it doesn't work out, this time it had. Yep, the kitchen, cupboards, tables, chairs, portable toilet, mini fridge and I even thought to buy my wife the kitchen sink. All in all, if you're going away, it is best you're kitted out right the first time. The last thing you need is to forget an item and the entire trip can be more difficult than it needs to be.
At the end of the day, our camping trip has certainly been one to remember with our site resembling the taj mahal.
While there are still hundreds of thousands of anglers and campers all holidaying, the time to pack up and head home will be upon us. In the mean time, there is still plenty of fishing to be had while the weather is kind to us.
This week I take a look at the correct method for rigging a soft plastic. For some, not knowing how to rig it correctly can cause fish to shy and not be tempted to devour it. Rigging it right, will improve the success rate having the lure swim and imitate a real live baitfish.
Lee Brake looks at some common mistakes many new anglers make when chasing big reds.
