The Victorian Fisheries Authority is proposing to introduce a minimum size of 120cm for all mako shark species following consideration of a proposal from recreational fishing group VRFish.

VFA Chief Executive Officer Travis Dowling said shark fishing is popular from boats, the shore and piers right along the Victorian coast.

"Mako sharks currently fit within the overarching category of shark catch limits, which is subject to a bag/possession limit of 1 per species and no minimum size," said Mr Dowling.

"The proposed 120cm minimum size for mako sharks would be measured from the rear most gill slit to the base of the tail fin on any side of the body.

"The proposed minimum size will increase protection of juvenile sharks and ensure that game fishing for sharks in Victorian waters continues to provide an exciting experience."

Mr Dowling said recreational fishers continue to demonstrate responsible stewardship over Victorian fisheries resources by supporting changes that help ensure fish for the future.

Public consultation on the proposed minimum size ends on 8 June 2018.
