The switch has been made | Now is the time to catch big whiting in Western Port. Jarrod Day | I think it is fair to say that I have been going on long enough about the snapper fishing in Victoria and while some of you avid readers of the FBW newsletter might be throwing your hands in the air with excitement I have a new species to ramble on about for the next few weeks....
The seasons are changing and while the reds feeding habits are still supercharged, many anglers are already content with there results and are making the switch to targeting whiting.
Since the removal of commercial netting in Western Port, the whiting fishery is at the top of its game. We are finally seeing the results with fish sizes you could liken to that of what they catch in South Australia.
Those that have already been catching whiting have been keeping it quite under raps and why not so when the likes of fish up to 48-49cm cruising around on the bottom.
Of the fish I have heard of thus far, most have been taken in the deeper waters. Last season saw an increase in anglers fishing deeper waters throughout the Port with good results and already more and more anglers are fishing these areas once again.
As we move closer to December, the snapper will quieten down making the humble whiting a target for all. There will still be those anglers that fish in the shallows and while their catch may contain many fish in the 35-40cm bracket, making a move into depths of 10-14m will see the larger models being taken. Don't forget the berley though, without it you'll certainly do the hard yards.

| Cyclone Alissia has now passed over the top end. Jarrod Day | Around the country:
Although the winds and rains may have subsided in Vic, the Northern Territory has had to batten down the hatches as Tropical Cyclone Alissia beard down on the city yesterday. When it hit landfall it was only a category 1 and while no damage was recorded, she did dump a significant amount of rain. This is certainly a good thing as the last tow barra seasons have been quite poor due to the lack of rain. We can only hope that this years wet is better than the last few and subsequently, the approaching barra season goes bonkers.
New South Wales:
After speaking with my old mate Ben Boultin from Narooma just the other day, Ben said that the fishing is getting much better along the Southern New South Wales coast. A small amount of kingfish have turned up and as the next few months approach, the fishing will only get better. Ben has been out wide on occasion and found some good blue eye while deep water dropping. Amongst a host of other species, the blue eye are highly prized.

Queensland:
Currently a good friend of mine, Glen Salter is up off Cairns trolling around the offshore reefs and living it up. Just yesterday, he posted a nice photo on facebook of a yellowfin tuna they caught while on the search for Black Marlin. The blacks will be on the move down the coast by now and while I have heard of fish to 700lb being tagged and released, it will be only mere days until someone cracks a 1000 pounder.

South Australia:
The snapper season might be currently closed in South Australian waters but it is only weeks away until it reopens. Although the state-wide Snapper fishing closure is from midday 1 November to midday 15 December for all fishing sectors, there are still some reefs which have further closures due to snapper spawning.
These are:
Location / Location coordinates
Illusion / 137o 32.600' E, 33o 28.900' S
Santa Anna / 137° 36.300' E, 33° 36.300' S
Jurassic Park / 137o 19.100' E, 33° 54.700' S
Estelle Star / 136° 50.900' E, 33° 58.900' S
Gulf St Vincent / 138° 00.000' E, 34° 25.860' S
Even with these specific reefs closed off from midday 15 December 2013 to midday 31 January 2014 there are still plenty of other reefs in which you can catch quality fish. All it takes is a good sounder and some research to find them.
Aside from the above the team at FBW have continued to head out fishing before crunching the keyboard to deliver some very educational features.

This week Ben Knaggs revisits his sounding feature from last month about using detailed marine charting and today's sophisticated sonar technology to search out structure on the seafloor that will hold fish. This time around, Ben expands upon the subject by looking at how best to target that structure once you've marked it.
Shane Murton goes on the hunt for King George whiting along the South Australian coastline and while they may not be the biggest species to invade SA's inshore waters over the warmer months, what they lack in size whiting more than make up for in terms of the great light-tackle sport they provide, and of course their sublime culinary qualities.

With the micro jigging craze exploding all around the country, I have an in-depth look at the new Storm Gomoku range of fishing rods. If you're thinking of getting into light jigging, take a serious look at these weapons. You'll be very impressed.
