Fishing and the holidays | Rubbers for reds Jarrod Day | The countdown now begins for many around the country. With Christmas only seven days away, those going away on annual holidays are beginning the wind down from work and finalising all their affairs for when the day comes to head off.
Those venturing somewhere near the beach with a spot or two of fishing in mind will have to contend with hundreds of other holiday makers all with the same thoughts. This can become a frustrating time of year with an increase of boat traffic on the water, finding fish can be a difficult task.
While we all enjoy our fishing and bringing home a feed, it is this time of year that you will have to think outside the square if you want consistent success.
In close where calamari and whiting would normally be a target, might be a struggle to find them in the hot summer months. In this case while boaties, jet skiers and kayakers flood the shallows, working further away from the shore and away from the hoards of other water craft is where you'll find quality fish. Ideally, it is nice to take the family out on a lovely windless day but try not to focus on specific species that would normally be a challenge to catch as the boat traffic just makes things a lot harder. Look at other species that a fun to catch and usually in vast numbers. Drifting for flathead, catching garfish or drifting for calamari can be a highlight for many and some of the tastiest fish to eat.
It is not only the coastline that becomes over populated either. Freshwater lakes get their fair influx from holiday makers and while not all enjoy fishing as such, water skiers and waker boarders also join in the fun of being away. This can see fish move into locations inaccessible by boat in which taking to the bank and working around the trees, late afternoon or early morning could be your best option.
While we all enjoy getting away and catching a fish or two you may just have to take a deep breath and try new locations to find them. What ever you do and where ever you go there will still be plenty of fish to catch providing you explore new areas away from others.
While the rest of the team at FBW are taking a well deserved break, I somehow am still in the office and in fact, taking it with me while I'm on holidays. As they say, 'no rest for the wicked'. Below is this weeks most recent feature and following that are a bunch of past articles written by myself that I hope you find some useful information from.
This week, I headed into Port Phillip Bay with work colleague Benno in search of snapper using soft plastics. With today's electronic equipment, finding fish was no problem. Once we found what lures they wanted to eat, it was on for young and old.
