It is really amazing just how far we have come these days. I mean, with technology and all. As I sit and type this week's editorial, I have had three text messages, five facebook updates and two emails of friends currently out on Port Phillip Bay catching snapper. While I'm in front of my laptop, a slight sense of depression is setting in knowing that I too could be out there getting buckles but like all keen Victorian snapper fisho's I will be out on the water before sunrise tomorrow.
That's just a pre-requisite of fishing in Victoria throughout snapper season. Gone are the days of the so called 'gentleman's hours' rather it is almost a night shift if you want to be successful.
Snapper are quite a frustrating species at the best of times but if there were just two traits you should adhere to, it is fishing fist light and a tide change. History shows that this is the very best time to catch fish and by 9-10am you might as well pack up and head home as the bite time is all over. Even during the middle of the day should there be a tide change, they are very hesitant in taking baits but should you go to work then come back out in the afternoon to fish sunset, you'll be back into the action right on dark. Sometimes I wish these frustrating fish would simply change their ways but you can't always get what you ask for, so as I finish up, it is time for me to rig up my rods, pack the car and hit the sack. It's going to be a long day tomorrow when the alarm goes off at 3am. This week Lee Brake heads to Teemburra Dam, a place he hadn't ventured in months. His aim was to hook into a few of the barramundi that the dam is known for, but it was always going to be a risky trip having to juggle casts around the lilies.

Gary Brown finishes off part two of his 'alternative to a hook and a ball sinker' piece in which he wrote back in July. Since then Gary has had a number of anglers contact him about how to rig the baits up and asked him if he could include a few photos.
