Northwest Victorian anglers to benefit from boat ramp upgrades

by Alison Clarke on 9 Feb 2013
Murray River . ..
Local anglers are set to benefit from upgrades to a number of boat ramps along the Murray River between Robinvale and Berribee. Member for Mildura Peter Crisp said up to ten boat ramps in urgent need of repair would be upgraded over the coming year as part of this multi-agency project, which has already received widespread support from local anglers.

The ramps likely to receive the much needed upgrades can be found at locations which are mostly along the Victorian side of the Murray River, such as Berribee, Lock Nine, Lake Culluleraine, Cowanna Bend, Kings Billabong, Danes Road, Hattah Kulkyne, Robinvale and Wemen.

The Victorian Government’s Recreational Fishing Initiative will fund the upgrades in conjunction with the Mallee Catchment Management Authority and Parks Victoria.

Mr. Crisp said the Murray River in the Sunraysia region was very popular with Victorian fishers who enjoy catching Murray cod, golden perch and spiny freshwater crayfish.

Mr. Crisp said many Victorian fishers and their families travelled to the Murray River to camp and fish and the upgrades meant they would be able to launch and retrieve their boats with greater ease at these locations.

'The Recreational Fishing Initiative aims to improve angler access and facilities, stock more fish, install cleaning tables, deploy fishing reefs and strengthen compliance,' Mr. Crisp said.

'Fishing is a popular pastime for over 720,000 Victorians and supports regional businesses ranging from hotels to bait and tackle stores.'

If you have a suggestion about how to improve fishing access and infrastructure in Sunraysia then email your idea to Fisheries Victoria via improving.fishing@dpi.vic.gov.au.

Offshore, tuna are still around and Bluefin seem to be about in even greater numbers than years past. Coffee coloured freshwater still seems to be the norm around the state’s coastline, making angling difficult for those who have salt in their veins. Offshore, tuna are still around and Bluefin seem to be about in even greater numbers than years past. A charter operator from the South of the state notched up his 1,000th tuna caught recently, so that’s not a bad record for the season.
