Improved boating access for freshwater anglers on Gunbower Creek

by Marc Ainsworth on 6 May 2013
.
The earthen boat ramp just outside Koondrook on the Gunbower Creek will be significantly upgraded to improve access for freshwater anglers chasing native fish.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said the North Central Catchment Management Authority will manage the works and planning for the upgrade with support from the Gannawarra Shire Council.

'Gunbower Creek boasts a great reputation for Murray cod, thanks in part to the annual release of fingerling sized fish that supplement wild stocks,' Mr Walsh said.

'We anticipate the upgrade will be complete in time for the opening of the 2013 Murray cod fishing season on 1 December, 2013.

'Improving access is vital to the growth of recreational fishing across the State, which is why we are investing nearly $60,000 of State Government funding into this project.'

It is important that fishers are provided safe and reliable access to our waterways. The Boating Safety and Facilities Program run by the Department of Transport, along with the $16 million Recreational Fishing Initiative run by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, have been developed to deliver these kind of projects.

In addition to improving access and boating facilities throughout Victoria, the Recreational Fishing Initiative is stocking more fish, installing fish cleaning tables, building fishing reefs and strengthening fisheries enforcement and education.

'We want to keep this state a top fishing destination for the 721,000 Victorians who fish annually,' Mr Walsh said.
