Heavy weather threatens NSW coast

by RMS on 22 Feb 2013
.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has issued an alert following State Emergency Service (SES) and Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warnings about damaging winds, heavy rain and the potential for flooding for most of coastal NSW.

RMS Acting General Manager Boating Operations Scott Kidd said a severe weather warning was in place for the Northern Rivers, mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands.

'A flood watch has also been issued for coastal rivers and offshore from the Queensland coast through to the Hunter region,' Mr Kidd said.

'The BOM has advised there is a deep low pressure system off the north coast of NSW which is moving west-southwest.

'The system is forecast to bring vigorous gusty winds to the central and south coasts of the State from early Saturday morning.

'The Harbour Masters of Port Kembla and Newcastle have advised all trading vessels to avoid using the offshore anchorage areas and to remain well clear of the coast from midday today until further notice.'

'All NSW ports remain open for shipping movements at this stage.'

'Skippers should check the weather and consider whether it is necessary to go boating this weekend and if possible hold off until these conditions subside.

'Crossing a coastal bar, heading offshore or rock fishing should be avoided.

'While strong winds can mean dangerous conditions for vessels on moorings which have been poorly maintained, boat owners should only venture out to check their moorings are intact and in good working order if the weather conditions allow it,' Mr Kidd said.

Check them before you leave harbor for condition and if they have an expiration date, be sure they are current. Their intended purpose is to summon help should the need arise and should be displayed only when immediate or potential danger exists. Visual distress signals can only be effective when someone can see them.
