Expedition Pass Reservoir finds Macquarie perch thriving in Victoria

Fisheries Victoria gained some optimistic results from Expedition Pass Reservoir after its latest survey indicated thriving population of Macquarie perch in the Victorian waters.

Fisheries Victoria is encouraged by a recent survey in Expedition Pass Reservoir, near Castlemaine.

The survey results confirm that stocked Macquarie perch are surviving and growing alongside redfin and stocked golden perch.

Six Macquarie perch were caught, the biggest of which was 28cm, a comparable size to similarly aged fish from Lake Dartmouth.

Nearly 10,000 Macquarie perch have been released into the reservoir to assist in this endangered species' recovery.

Macquarie perch can only be taken from three waters in accordance with strict catch limits and a three month closed season: Macquarie Perch

Fisheries managers hope to open a fishery for the species here in coming years.

The survey also captured five golden perch between 39 and 46cm and over 30 redfin to 31cm.
