Man plucked from Shoalhaven River in 40 knot winds

In this afternoon’s sudden high winds, Volunteers from Marine Rescue Shoalhaven have rescued a man whose vessel capsized on the Shoalhaven River

A Gale Warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 12.47 today for Illawarra and Eden coastal waters and Sydney closed waters.

Marine Rescue Shoalhaven Unit Commander Terry Watson said a member of the public had alerted the unit at 1:25pm to the plight of a man whose boat had capsized on the river in the 40 knot winds.

'We called in a crew to launch our fast response rigid inflatable boat and they were quickly on the scene.' Commander Watson said.

'Skipper Mike Boadle and crew members Lis Shaw and Bill Smith located the man clinging to a yellow buoy but there was no sign of his boat.

'Fortunately, the man was wearing a lifejacket and this clearly made a difference to his ability to stay afloat.'

The man was transported to a NSW Ambulance waiting atCrookhaven Heads and treated for mild hypothermia.

Marine Rescue Illawarra Regional Controller Bruce Mitchell said there had been no reports of any sightings of the missing boat.

'Boaters who are still on the water in these conditions should be aware of the potential navigation hazard as they travel on the Shoalhaven River between Comerongisland and the Crookhaven Heads boat ramp,'Mr Mitchell said.

Marine Rescue NSW urges boaters to always wear a lifejacket and always check weather/wind forecasts before leaving home
