Boat launching facility at Patterson River officially opened

The state’s busiest recreational boat launching facility at Patterson River was officially opened today by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith and Member for Carrum Donna Bauer following a $430,000 Victorian Coalition Government upgrade.
Mr Smith and Ms Bauer said the joint Parks Victoria and Transport Safety Victoria funded upgrade was a major boost for recreational boat owners and fishers, providing safer and more efficient boat launching and retrieving and improved fishing access.
'Boating and recreational fishing are among Australia’s most popular pastimes and the Coalition Government’s work to upgrade Victoria’s most-used boat launching facility will make it easier and safer for people of all backgrounds to take part in these enjoyable activities,' Mr Smith said.
Ms Bauer said the new 170 metre long berthing section had been built to last for at least 30 years.
'This is an important investment in what is one of the most significant pieces of infrastructure supporting Melbourne’s recreational fishers and boat users,' Ms Bauer said.
In a further boost for recreational fishing and the Coalition Government’s commitment to establishing strong environmental partnerships, Mr Smith also announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Parks Victoria and Victoria’s peak recreational fishing organisation VRFish.
'This agreement demonstrates the growing relationship between the Coalition Government, Parks Victoria and Victoria’s peak body representing recreational fishers,' Mr Smith said.
'The MoU is a wonderful demonstration of the Coalition Government’s Environmental Partnerships model at work.
'This is yet another example of how government agencies and the community can work together in a positive way to ensure access and enjoyment of our environment, while supporting opportunities for education about the value of our natural spaces and practical action on conservation.'
Chair of VRFish Russell Conway, who was on hand to sign the MoU on behalf of his organisation, also welcomed the upgrade of the boat ramp and the support provided by local Parks Victoria staff and Ms Bauer.
'The Patterson River boat ramp is the highest capacity ramp in Victoria. We’ve just experienced another record-breaking snapper season, so these improved moorings are very welcome,' Mr Conway said.
'The delivery of the new fishing platform to the east of ramp four as part of this project is of particular benefit in reducing interactions between land-based fishers and mooring boats and also provides wheelchair access to this popular fishing spot.
'This is an excellent example of win–win outcomes that will be delivered in the future as a result of the VRFish and Parks Victoria MoU that has been signed today,' Mr Conway said.
