Thanks to upgrades funded by the Victorian Government’s,$16 million Recreational Fishing Initiative, Recreational fishers now have better access to the Avon and Latrobe Rivers.

Member for Gippsland East, Tim Bull, said the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, and local fishers had made significant improvements that would benefit locals and visitors chasing black bream and estuary perch.

'The Springberg Lane boat ramp on the Avon River, 15 kilometres east of Stratford, has received a much needed upgrade,' Mr Bull said.

'The existing access track and car park have been improved and there are now better mooring facilities.

'The improvements should enable year-round and all-weather access with easier boat launching.'

Mr Bull said significant works had also been undertaken along the Allmans Levee Track, which leads to the Latrobe River and Lake Wellington through the Heart Morass Game Reserve.

'Historically, even minor flooding inundated the track and regularly restricted access.

'The height of the track has been raised to provide all-weather access to the boat ramp, and parking facilities have been resurfaced,' said Mr Bull.

West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority Chairman, Angus Hume, said these projects are a really good example of recreational fishing funds at work, as it not only benefits fisherman and campers, but the environment.

'The projects include works to protect the waterway and control erosion, whilst providing better facilities for recreational fishers and campers,' said Mr Hume.

In addition to improving access and boating facilities, the Recreational Fishing Initiative is stocking more fish, installing fish cleaning tables, building fishing reefs and strengthening fisheries enforcement and education.

'We want to keep this state a top fishing destination for the 721,000 Victorians who fish annually,' Mr Bull said.
